She’s very small and doesn’t eat a lot for her age, she was fine when we got her but caught a cold and then went downhill, she was given anti-bios and perked up again.
She then caught a cold again and we repeated, she reacted the same.
But now she’s 3 months and 800lb, wereas our other kitten is the same age and 1.5kg. The vet injected her with fluids because she was dehydrated gave us KRM to give her 5 times a day through a syringe and water 5 times a day.
We took her the vets yesterday and she suspects a liver problem, where her liver isn’t developed properly, as she has a HUGE tummy which she thinks is all fluids, shakes now and again after she eats, sleeps all day and doesn’t play much, the vet did blood tests of her liver, a liver index and an antibody, and suggested putting her down rather than struggling to keep her going and possibly exhausting her and our finances if she does have the liver problem she thinks.
Right now I’m feeding her whiskers kitten food until she won’t eat any more, than gourmet adult cat food until she won’t eat any more of that.
We’re waiting for the results now, but I was wondering: If a kitten has a bad liver, is there ANY hope at all? I’ve tried researching online but I don’t seem to be able to find the type of liver problem she potentially has. I can’t bare to think of not having her here.
Thanks a lot for reading.
Eric – some of the blood tests are to check for lukemia. That was the original worry after the 2nd bout of a cold.
The vet has told us she’s almost certain it’s liver and to expect the worst.
aw, I am so sorry that is really, really sad. I couldn’t imagine having to put my kitten down. I really don’t have an answer – but I hope somebody on here does! Try calling maybe another vet and ask for another opinion.
That’s all I have to say, I’m not sure really what else! Good luck though.
I hope everything will turn out okay. But if she does have to be put down, know its for the better even though thats so tough.

You must give up here, if you love her.

I don’t understand either what to do, what I would do is not giving her any more anibiotic or drug based medicine and give her cooked chicken or tuna for few days or even row chicken and leave her in a very warm place to rest, not in the floor. Liver is liver for any being, so no milk, no drugs, no fat, no spice food.

Have you checked for leukemia? I have a cat with leukemia that exhibited the same symptoms, and can be dealt with by giving prednisone pills.
It could also be FIP. If that’s the case, I’m afraid she’s done for. There’s no cure.
What you need to do is take your kitten to at least one, possibly two other vets. Some vets miss stuff oters don’t.
Euthanasia is a last resort.

Sorry for your situation. I think you should do what you want (as long as the cat is not suffering). It is your money. Here is some info:

Good luck and hope all turns out well.

If your vet says that it is almost certain that she is dying then the decision you are faced with is not whether to try to make her live or to let her die (if it was realistic that you could make her live the vet would do that) but it is whether you give her a quick death with little suffering or you give her a long drawn-out death where she might have more pain. You mustn’t feel bad about having her put to sleep- remember you are not deciding to kill her, you are just managing her inevitable death in a way that reduces the time she spends in pain. It is a terrible tragedy and I do feel for you. When she is gone please do not mourn too long, but celebrate her short life. If you bring in another kitten later on it will not be to replace her, but it will be to give your other kitten a playmate and bring some light back.
PS It might be a good idea for your vet to also test for FIP, in case there is a risk of it spreading to the other kitten.

I think its better for the poor kitten, and your family, to accept the inevitable and put her down if the vet comes back with that news. She sounds like she was sick from the get go, and you did what you thought was best. If you don’t mind my asking, did you contact the breeder to see if the other kittens were sick as well? There may be some clues if the rest of the litter was also ill. If you got her from a pet store, then I am sorry to say but this is all too typical for pet store kittens, which is why we preach against them so heavily. If she was from a reputable breeder, she should have come with a health guarantee of some sort, so you may be able to get a new kitten or get your money back. I know that’s not the sort of thing you WANT to think about, but its something to take into consideration. Also, Whiskers kitten food is of such a poor quality that it leads to liver and bladder and kidney problems. I am NOT saying that’s what has happened here, but it probably didn’t help. Better quality cat food leads to a healthier kitten. Some things to consider. I would prepare yourself tho, I don’t think this is going to end well, and I am truly, very sorry for you and your family and for your poor kitten. Best of luck.
